Ann and Celia give up hour upon hour of their time to breed, look after, heal and hibernate all the tortoises who live at the sanctuary every day, week and month of the year. It's certainly a full time job caring for such a huge number of tortoises. Some of which are just beginning their life to those moving well into their senior years. Unfortunately, from time to time a tortoise comes in that is ill or injured so Ann and Celia put all their experience into the health and recuperation of the sick hoping to nurse them back to fully fitness.
One of those most extreme cases was that of Toby. He came into the sanctuary after being found by his owners with a wound from a dog attack. His leg was so badly damaged it had to be amputated. The vet was close to putting Toby to sleep but Ann and Celia took on the task of trying to heal him. They did just that , he survived and now although missing a back limb is living an active life like all his mates at the sanctuary.
